Commentary Q3 2017

Despite Elevated Risks, Markets Appear Blasé

The third quarter witnessed another strong move for international equity markets as this year’s powerful bull market persisted. International equity investors also continued to benefit from a weak U.S. dollar, which was down once again during Q3.

At the sector level, performance was positive across the board—and while this is encouraging, we continue to be a bit confused by the market’s reactions to geopolitical events. Whether it be the ongoing natural disasters or the ever-increasing political risk, the markets seem unconcerned...which is a bit concerning to us.

In this Q3 2017 Market Commentary, “Despite Elevated Risks, Markets Appear Blasé,” the international equity team at R Squared Capital Management (former team at Julius Baer/Artio Global) shares their market insights.

 Topics in this commentary include:

  • A sample of different event risks that showed up during Q3
  • What made energy the best-performing sector for this quarter
  • Why we think the current calm, low-volatility environment may have a limited life span
